Speech Prompt

Prepare a speech that discusses a historical, civil rights event that has somehow impacted your own life. Consider sharing how that event may have improved or even caused challenges for you or loved ones while detailing the actions you would take to ensure improvement in the future. Be sure to reference Dr. King’s “Where Do We Go From Here?” speech in your discussion.

 

Contest open to Grades 4-12

Judging Divisions: 4-6 // 7-8 // 9-12

Up to 3 entries per division, per site  will be accepted

Speech Contest Rules

  • Students must submit a transcript or outline of the prepared speech by
    Thursday, November 30th via Google Forms.
     
  • All speeches will be delivered in person on the afternoon of Thursday, December 7th, 2022 at Clovis Veterans Memorial.
     
  • Speeches must be the original work of the student(s). It must not have been published previously in any form, including online.
     
  • Speeches must clearly address the contest theme and prompt.
     
  • Speeches may not be identical to any essay submissions.
     
  • Presented speeches should be 2-3 minutes long. Points will be adjusted for going incrementally longer or shorter than this time frame (see page 2 of the judging rubric).
     
  • First place contestants from each division will be invited to deliver their speech at the awards ceremony on the evening of Thursday, January 11th.
     
  • The top three entries from each division will be recognized with awards on the evening of Thursday, January 11th.
